It’s a Tough Job Working Off Shore

A lot of our clients work off shore in the oil and gas industry. They typically commute from Florida to either Mississippi or Louisiana for work. This type of work requires people to be away from their families from 14 to 30 days per month with varying amounts of time off. These are tough jobs.

Over the last several years, the slow economy, the additional restrictions placed on drilling and transporting oil and gas, and the decrease in the cost per barrel of gas have been devastating to this industry and to its employees. Many workers are paid a daily rate and have found that their rates have been more than cut in half. Some workers have left the industry completely in hopes of finding steady and consistent paying jobs. The financial pressure on these workers and their families has been tremendous.

We all accumulate debt while we work. While we are working to pay off the debt, we sometimes tie our spending to our income level without much cushion. Then, when the income reduction comes or the job loss, we find ourselves in a situation that we can no longer pay our bills.
